I sent you a guide a while back about what moving abroad really costs. Every figure in it is one I actually paid.

Here is what I got wrong about it. I wrote it only for people who had already picked a country. And I later realised many of you haven’t.

So the question that comes first is what countries will even have you, especially after Brexit. When I went looking for a straight answer to that, I could not find one. Not on the relocation sites, and not on gov. uk either, which is still printing an income figure for one country that is three years out of date and wrong by about €640 a month.

So I wrote it myself. Nine pages, free, no catch: [Are You Even Allowed?]

It splits every country into three groups. The ones that will have you if you can show the money. The ones that are effectively shut because of your age, which includes the country most people daydream about. And the one country where a British citizen can move, live, work and use the health service with no visa, no permit, no income test and no application of any kind. Most people have no idea it is there.

It also carries the trap I would most want you to know about. The cheapest and best known visa into three of the most popular countries quietly makes your job illegal, and people are applying for it right now without knowing.

One thing you could do for me, if you have twenty seconds. Hit reply and tell me which country you are looking at. I read every one, and it tells me what to write next.

Everyone who sells you a life abroad gets paid when you go. I don't.
