I left Britain in 2015 and I have not lived there since.

Five years in Thailand, where my son was born. A year back in England. Five and a half years in Cyprus, where my second son was born. Now Dubai.

Four moves, four sets of paperwork, and I got something wrong every single time. Not catastrophically. But every time there was a thing I did not know to ask, and every time I found it out later than I should have.

What I actually do

I make videos about leaving Britain and living abroad, mostly for people in their forties, fifties and sixties who are thinking about it seriously rather than idly.

I write to the list when a rule changes, a date gets close, or I have checked something worth knowing.

And I have written three things, two free and one not, because the same questions kept arriving in the comments and I got tired of answering them one at a time.

Why nobody pays me to tell you where to go

Everyone who tells you about moving abroad gets paid when you go. The estate agent gets paid when you buy. The developer gets paid when you sign. The relocation firm gets paid when you apply. The lawyer gets paid either way. Every one of them has a reason to tell you yes.

Nobody pays me to tell you where to go or what to do. No country, agent or developer has paid for a mention and none of them knows they are in there. If a company ever does pay to reach you, I will say so on the page it appears on. That is the only reason I am any use to you.

How I check things

I read what governments publish, check it against the source, and tell you what it says and where I found it. Their immigration department, their tax office, their own legal gazette. Not a relocation company, not a law firm's blog, not a forum.

When I cannot verify something, I say so and I name what I could not reach.

The boring facts

I still own two rental properties in York and I have run them from abroad the whole time. I have moved money, opened and closed accounts, dealt with the non-resident landlord scheme, and had at least one thing go wrong in every country I have lived in.

The rules I had to learn as a landlord abroad are in the free landlord guide.

None of that makes me an expert. It makes me somebody who has done it four times and takes notes.
